We had the opportunity Jordan and Justin’s Blumen Gardens Wedding in Sycamore. Jordan and Justin are so incredibly sweet! Ah! And Blumen Gardens has the most lovely outdoor wedding space. We feel so blessed to have met these two. Even with Chicago’s unpredictable weather, this summer wedding season, we always are fans of outdoor wedding ceremonies. I love how personalized outdoor ceremonies are and hands down we love photographing wedding ceremonies outside.
Blumen Gardens has the most wonderful rustic and charming outdoor ceremony space, and it’s not too far from Chicago. Jordan and Justin actually got ready in Naperville, before heading to Sycamore for their wedding. Jordan chose to get ready at her parents’ house, because it’s close the her and Justin’s new apartment, and perfectly on the way to Sycamore. I love it when people get ready at their parents’ house because it adds a lovely personal touch to their wedding day. 🙂
Ok, more jabber later- here are the photos from their Blumen Gardens Wedding.
Ah Jordan, you’re so lovely!!
Jordan’s parents’ house was so pretty. Here’s the ladies in front of the side garage. 🙂
And on to Jordan and Justin’s first look! We stopped by Herrick Lake Forest Preserve on our way to their Blumen Gardens Wedding.
And we made it to their Blumen Gardens Wedding venue! No traffic and just in time. 🙂 You guys, everything is a photo op here. <3
This shot that Jason took is my personal favorite from Jordan and Justin’s Blumen Gardens Wedding ceremony. Jordan is a huge fan of Black and White photos, so we made sure to include extra and even shot a couple of rolls of film in black and white as well. <3
Shhh… sometimes film can be blurry… I like to call it dreamy. #dreamyjustmarried
Yay! When we are outside of Cook County, we actually get to experience the signing of a marriage license. Thank you you guys for having us a part of your wedding day. I am so happy that the weather was amazing and that you got to have an outdoor ceremony with all of your friends and family. It was like a fairytale! (A fairy tale with a mesmerizing amount of photo ops).

One of my favorite parts of meeting Shannon and Alex was Alex’s excitement for having balloons for their NYC Lighthouse Wedding. (Insert delightful squealing here… by myself, not Alex)
Shannon and Alex wanted to have a brunch wedding, and what better than a floor to ceiling window lit space at the NYC Lighthouse Wedding space. The Lighthouse is located at Pier 61, which is a part of Chelsea Piers. Whew- that location was a bit of a mouthful. OH! Speaking of mouthfuls, the catering for the NYC lighthouse wedding was delicious and oh so pretty! They had a hors d’oeuvres station setup of perfect little bites. Not to mention, the were very photogenic, and I dig photogenic food.
Ok, now down to the nitty gritty- my Achilles heel… Which was the detail at their NYC Lighthouse wedding which Shannon was most Excited about- HER SHOES! They have wings! GOLDEN WINGS! Sorry guys, it’s just that I couldn’t get enough of them. Shannon chose to have Sophia Webster shoes for her wedding. Oh, and her dress! Shannon chose a light blue/lavender lining of her Maggie Sottero Londyn dress and Alex hunted down a tie to match the lining. It turned out beautiful! It was a super unique wedding dress idea… and one which I hope will become more popular because it turned out lovely. (Especially with those heels!) Now, onto their NYC Lighthouse wedding ceremony.
Shannon’s Mom and Sister’s pro-tip for getting the dress on: loop the buttons on with knitting needles!
This wonderful man is the bagpiper for Alex and Shannon’s Lighthouse ceremony. Michael Hannigan, bagpiper of New Jersey extraordinaire!
Balloon wedding! 🙂
And bags! Alex and his dad handmade their corntoss boards. 🙂 Gotta love a NYC lighthouse wedding.
After their NYC lighthouse wedding, we went on to their wedding after party! Shannon and Alex maximized the merriment by inviting all of their friends and family to join them at their favorite bar in NYC. Highlands is amazing- they are on point with their cocktail knowledge and make a mean Penicillin Cocktail.
Alex and Shannon, your details were amazing! Thank you for having us a part of your big day.

Eeek! I’m so excited to show you guys Erica and John’s Cafe Brauer wedding!
It was our first wedding of the 2016 season. We couldn’t have started our Chicago wedding photography year with a nicer couple for their Cafe Brauer wedding. Erica and John were/are awesome! We ventured were outside in March for their photos and they were such troopers to brave the chilly weather right on Lake Michigan. I’m glad that the bridesmaids had long dresses on – thanks Jenny Yoo! We were all filled with warm thoughts, good vibes, and love, which helped keep us all warm.
Erica and John had their wedding festivities at the historic Cafe Brauer in Lincoln Park. It is an amazingly beautiful space made by Perkins & Hamilton in a Prairie Style architecture. It is one of our favorite spots in the Chicago to photography.
Erica’s bouquet, the bridesmaid’s dresses, and all of the other details mimicked the lavender and prairie green in Cafe Brauer Wedding’s space. We started the day off at Hotel Lincoln– which is conveniently close, FILLED with Mid Century Modern furniture and amazing antiques, which are all locally sourced. Anything mid-century modern and vintage warms my heart. We also took a trip to the roof to Hotel Lincoln’s – The J. Parker.
Checkout the photos from their big day below.

Oh goodness, no. It’s not what you think.
As of late, we have been taking a roll of 35mm film at each of our couple’s weddings. We still shoot about 99% digital, and we love digital because it’s fast- and awesome for reception dance shots. But we also are obsessed with film. Film is slow. Film has a delayed sense of gratification, and it’s like Christmas morning every time we get our prints back from film.
We have been in love with film since we began photographing, before we even met. There is something about film that always makes me stare at photos with my mouth open, in awe. Honestly, we kind of forgot about shooting film over the years.
It wasn’t until we were at WPPI in 2011 and we met Jose Villa. I honestly didn’t know too much about him, instead of the fact that he was an amazing film wedding photographer. I saw his photos everywhere, sometimes not even knowing they were his. A couple of days after we met him, we ran into him at an expo booth, as he was saying his goodbyes to his film lab, Richard Photo Lab,before he went to the airport. When we exchanged hellos, he asked if we still shoot film. We said “No.” and then he handed us a 35mm Diana Camera with 8 rolls of film and responded- “You Should.”
For the next three years, that moment resonated with us.
We purchased a Canon EOS-1V 35mm film camera in May. Now we have progressed to our newest addition, our new and beloved Contax 645. I am beyond excited to have this little gem. They don’t make these 120mm cameras anymore, and the waist level viewfinder is hard to find. I cannot wait to show you guys magical colors and milky whites and ACTUAL film grain over the next coming years as we progress into becoming hybrid wedding photographers. Film & Digital.
Jose Villa, we cannot thank you enough for being so kind and inspiring.
It was such a joy to photograph Jamila and Andrei’s Lacuna Artist Loft wedding
Jamila!! You might recognize her- she was the awesome makeup artist who did Danley’s makeup when she got married a few years ago. Now it’s Jamila’s turn, and she had to get her own makeup artist. No one actually believed that she was going to hire a makeup artist- but! photos are proof, indeed she did. Andrei and Jamila picked Lacuna Artist Loft Wedding venue because Hebru used to use it as his main artist space. I’ve known Hebru and his work for years thanks to my old roommate Niki. He does pretty amazing stuff- check out his website!
Anyway, it ended up raining on Jamila and Andrei’s wedding day, like a crazy rain. Thankfully, it only lasted for about 30 minutes, so everyone was still able to enjoy the amazing rooftop wedding celebration at Lacuna Artist Loft’s roof- filled with a view of the Chicago skyline.
The Chicago Library is all fuzzy in the background behind the rain drops. Okay- so maybe it rained more than 30 minutes… but thankfully it was all gone by the time the cocktail hour was over.
I hope you guys will have an amazing trip to Zimbabwe! Please please post lots of pictures so I can Facebook stalk you. xoxo
